OIG Reports on Staffing Issues with Secret Service's Counter Sniper Team

The Inspector General for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS OIG) put out a report concluding that the Secret Service did not have a sufficient number of snipers to meet mission requirements. The report found that the counter-sniper team was staffed 73 percent below the level required to meet mission requirements, and that the number of events requiring sniper coverage increased by 150 percent between 2020 and 2024. The Inspector General recommended that the agency increase staffing and develop a plan to ensure mandatory re-qualification standards were met.
