Snapshot Report: Status of the IRS' Workforce
Other | June 9, 2026
In a June 9, 2026 snapshot report, The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) found that 31,273 employees separated, accepted a deferred resignation offer, or used another incentive to leave the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) between January 2025 and January 2026, totaling just under 30 percent of the agency's workforce. The report noted that tax examination was hit particularly hard by the staffing reductions. It also detailed how the IRS lost almost half of its Senior Executive Service (SES): 142 members of the SES left the agency by January 2026.
