EO 14,274: Restoring Common Sense to Federal Office Space Management

This Executive Order (EO) revoked two earlier EO's, one issued by President Carter and the other issued by President Clinton, that directed the government to prioritize considering locating federal buildings in urban areas and in historical buildings. The EO states that agencies "must be where the people are." However, when President Trump took office about 80% of federal employees already worked outside the Washington, D.C. area. On the campaign trail, Trump had promised to relocate federal workers, stating that positions could be moved out of Washington "to places filled with patriots who love America." When an agency relocates, as a general matter employees must also relocate or face job loss.
