Report: SSA Lost Nearly 7,000 Workers in 2025

A report by the Center for American Progress (CAP) analyzes OPM data and indicates that from January 2025 to November of the same year, the SSA’s staff shrunk by 6,645 people. This is consistent with a goal set by SSA in early 2025 to reduce staff to about 50,000 employees. According to the report, this represents a decrease of more than 11 percent from the end of federal fiscal year 2024, and the reductions have not been evenly felt. Some field offices have closed entirely, and many have lost more than a quarter of their staff.
