Joint Office of Energy & Transportation Effectively Shuttered by Firings & Resignations

According to NPR, by late April 2025 no full-time federal employees remained at the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, created to coordinate the Departments of Transportation and Energy's work deploying electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Former staffers said the office — which had employed roughly 50 people at its peak — lost employees to the termination of probationary staff and two rounds of the deferred resignation program. The emptying out of the office does not appear to have been planned: no executive order or office-specific layoff was directed at it, and former staffers described its emptying as the byproduct of government-wide workforce measures. A July 2025 GAO report confirmed the staff reductions, but the office's website remains online without listing any staff.
