Staffing Cuts at Department of Transportation

According to news reporting, seven percent of the workforce of the Department of Transportation (DOT) accepted the deferred resignation offer by the Department of Government Efficiency and the Office of Personnel Management. However, the numbers were much higher at some DOT components: 33 percent at the Federal Transit Administration; 28 percent at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration; and 26 percent at the Federal Highway Administration. The Senate Commerce Committee questions for the record for DOT modal nominees (July 16, 2025) state that 4,127 of DOT's 56,989 employees had accepted deferred resignation as of early July 2025, including 13.7 percent of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (169 employees) and 13.1 percent of Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
