VA Terminates Union Contracts for Most Bargaining-Unit Employees
Press Release or Fact Sheet | August 6, 2025
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced that it cancelled most collective bargaining agreements with labor unions that represented VA employees, though certain employees (police, firefighters, and security guards) were unaffected. The affected unions include American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO (AFGE); National Association of Government Employees (NAGE); National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE); National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU); and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). Media reports indicate that roughly 80% of the VA's workforce was unionized and is thus affected by this decision.
