OIG Announces Oversight Reviews of DHS Immigration Enforcement Programs & Operations

On February 5, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) announced eight ongoing oversight reviews of DHS immigration enforcement programs and operations. The reviews cover: Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) hiring and training capacity; the 287(g) program through which ICE partners with state and local law enforcement; ICE's use of expedited removal authority; Custom and Border Protection's (CBP) interior immigration enforcement practices; ICE's processes for investigating excessive force allegations; DHS's procedures for preventing the arrest of U.S. citizens during immigration operations; unannounced inspections of ICE detention facilities; and DHS's management of biometric data and personally identifiable information. The OIG did not provide a completion timeline but noted it would alert DHS leadership and Congress immediately if investigators identify issues posing a serious or imminent threat to safety, health, property, or continuity of operations.
