On October 10, 2025, the Department of Education began issuing additional reduction in force notices to 466 employees in response to the 2025 government shutdown. This reduction in force was paused on October 28, 2025, when Judge Illston of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California issued a preliminary injunction.
