U.S. Department of Education Cancels October 2025 Reduction in Force Notices

On November 21, 2025, the Department of Education notified the 466 employees who received reduction in force (RIF) notices on October 10, 2025, that their RIFs were canceled. The cancellations were the result of provisions in the continuing resolution passed by Congress to reopen the government which provided that any RIF notice issued on October 1st or later "shall have no force or effect." The continuing resolution also barred federal agencies from using any funding to conduct any further RIFs as long as the continuing resolution is in effect.
