EO 14,168: Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism & Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government

This executive order (EO), "Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government," established a government-wide policy that the United States would only recognize two sexes, male and female, which it stated were immutable and identified at birth. It had far-reaching implications for transgender people in the United States, and also instructed the federal government to take certain actions to implement its position on the existence of transgender people. For example, the EO directs the Office of Personnel Management to ensure federal personnel records reflect the same binary definition. The order directed agency heads to "promptly rescind all guidance documents inconsistent with the requirements of this order or the Attorney General's guidance issued pursuant to this order, or rescind such parts of such documents that are inconsistent in such manner."
