Defense Ends Recognition of Cultural Observances, Including Heritage or Awareness Months

In January 2025, news media reported Department of Defense (DOD) Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo ending official recognition of identity observance months including Black History Month and Pride Month. On that same day, a departmental email titled "Cultural Observance Guidance" stated "DOD Components and Military Departments will not use official resources, to include man-hours, to host celebrations or events related to cultural awareness months."
