EO 14,170: Reforming the Federal Hiring Process & Restoring Merit to Government Service
Executive Order | January 20, 2025
This Executive Order (EO) overhauls federal recruitment and hiring processes. It directs the Department of Government Efficiency, the Office of Personnel Management, and the Office of Management and Budget to work with the White House to design a hiring plan to “prevent the hiring of individuals based on their race, sex, or religion" and to prioritize hiring individuals who hold certain beliefs or opinions — for example, those who are "passionate about the ideals of our American republic." It mandates certain hiring process reforms such as reducing the time to hire and increasing communication with candidates. The EO also mandates agency leadership involvement in all hiring processes.
